These pictures are amazing. I too have a fascination with sub-culture - I guess they are calling this “fan studies” or “fandom.” My academic interest in this may have started with a respect for Lanham’s Hipster Handbook and the less-acclaimed but BETTER follow-up (in my college memory) Food Court Druids.

My favorite empowering subculture source however, which these pics remind me of, is the delightfully horrifying coffee-table book (that I purchased at Powerhouse Arena): Deviant Desires by Katharine Gates. THAT is a sympathetic/complimentary look at deviant sexual subcultures. The book is a great present. Aside from the shocking pictures, Gates’ copy is an inspiring and empowering celebration of sub-culture and pride in individuals.

From publisher: “heroes and heroines of a do-it-yourself porn revolution. … these deviants defy all expectations as they actively participate in creating their own erotic entertainment, forging new art, original literature and fluid sexual identities. … Nothing is sacred and anything can be sexualized, from Disney characters and B-Movie monsters to baked beans, childrens birthday balloons and Thanksgiving dinner!”

Lady Sovereign - I Got You Dancing. This is such a trainwreck, I can’t help but share. Can you understand a single sloppy word coming out of her bratty little mouth?

I LOVE Lady SOV. But that’s just because I need a white girl rapper pop-ish star roll model to look up to.

I feel this video is a mess though. And she’s jumping on the exploitative pop-rap train with the auto-tuning, sounds like every hit these days. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but either hop on or off - she used to be more alt and edgy so it is a shame to see her sound so mainstream now, and just weird cause she’s so serious about it. Also, she should have used a male or other sampled vocals for her chorus. ONLY her voice in this song is too much.

Other than that though, let’s hear it for the S. O.V. It’s true, I still gotta give it up to her.
